Holtz Rubenstein Reminick’s Town Hall Meeting for Individuals and Businesses Affected by the Madoff Scheme
January 21, 2009 - Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP held a Town Hall style meeting for individuals or businesses that file taxes in New York State who were allegedly defrauded by Bernard Madoff and his business, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.
“The firm made this gesture because of its commitment to help New Yorkers and their business community through one of its toughest economic times,” noted Francis J. Candia, Holtz Rubenstein Reminick’s (“HRR”) Managing Partner. “The fallout from the Madoff scheme is simply compounding an already bad economic environment in the New York metropolitan area. It’s affecting clients and friends of our firm who are individual tax payers. It is also affecting individuals who own privately-held businesses or run publicly-traded companies in the real estate industry, in construction, private equity, biotech, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, and, most regretfully, not-for-profits.”
An HRR Response Team has been assembled to handle the accounting, tax, and business fraud issues resulting from the scheme. The team consists of Timothy W. Mulcahy, Partner-in-Charge of HRR Taxation Services; Joel R. Podgor, Partner-in-Charge of HRR White Collar Crime and Tax Fraud Services, and Gordon Siess, Partner-in-Charge of HRR Not-for-Profit Services. Aside from handling inquires from clients and friends of the firm regarding the Madoff matter, the team issues an electronic bulletin each week which addresses breaking news on the matter, as it unfolds.
On January 21, 2009, HRR’s Response Team, along with representatives from the legal and investment advisory professions, hosted a Town Hall meeting at the Jumeirah Essex House in Manhattan. The meeting drew a sell-out crowd and enabled taxpayers and CEOs, CFOs, and Controllers of both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations to voice their concerns.
